AITA for telling a stranger at a café that her kid isn't my responsibility?

I (27F) was working at a coffee shop yesterday when a woman with a toddler sat down at the

table next to me. About 20 minutes later, she got up and said, "Can you watch him for a few minutes? I'll be right back."
  • 04
Before I could respond, she just walked off. I was stunned. I don't know this woman, and I'm not comfortable being left alone with

someone else's child. The little boy started fidgeting and eventually tried to run toward the door. I followed him so he

wouldn't get hurt, but when his mom came back (15 minutes later), I told her, "You can't just dump your kid on a stranger. I'm not responsible for him." She got
  • 07
defensive and said, "I only asked because you look nice. If you didn't want to help, you could've just said so." I told her I did want to say no, but she didn't give me a chance before walking away.

Now some people are telling me I was too harsh and could've just let it go. Others say she crossed a huge line. So AITA for snapping at her?

ElimGarakOfCardassia NTA. She knew what she was doing, and is just mad that she was held accountable.
  • 11
BeeBlushy Exactly, she just didn't like being called out for it.
  • 12
alanlight I would have called the cops when she didn't return after 90 seconds.

  • 14
DazzleBaby_ Honestly! No joke, 90 seconds is already pushing it. 15 minutes is way too long to leave a toddler like that.
  • 15
CoffeeCrafts_Books Definitely, NTA. I cannot imagine ever leaving my children with a total stranger in a coffee shop for any amount of time.
  • 16
Forsaken_Pick3201 NTA - some parents need the wake up call. I was in a store the other day and a woman just walked off and left her child in a cart, in the middle of an isle and just walked away to another isle.
  • 17
She wasn't close enough to save the child if they fell out, to see if someone grabbed her child, to stop someone from harming her child. Sh ot, she couldn't even see her child.
  • 18
I said something loud enough, that I hope she heard me. She was moving too fast for me to be sure. Not sure why she didn't just take her cart and child with her.

Crazy4Swayze420 NTA whoever said you were being harsh is not worth keeping around or just very creepy and weird. Personally I'd have called the police for child abandonment after like 5 min tops.
  • 21
Kylou8 NTA. If something happened to the kid, you would be in trouble. I don't understand people these days. Who would leave their child with a complete stranger??
  • 22
Lilodo07 Good lord. Bad parenting on her part. I guess goodlooking and kind ppl can't be serial killers or child abductors?! You are definitely NTA. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
  • 23
Legitimate-Step-372 Nta. She could sue you or the cafe if anything had gone wrong in that time, you could lose your job because of that risk. It's a coffee shop, not a daycare
  • 24
S-M-G_417 Ohhhh NTA! That is crazy behavior. She had no idea who you were! I would Neverrrrrrrr

leave my kid with a random person at a public place. The thing with this situation, it happens fast and before you can
  • 26
react, it's already happened. Don't let people shame you for this, i think you should've been much harsher with the mother.
